Song of the Garden Bandit Specialty Threads & Inspiration

The talented Melissa of Storyteller Stitchery and I worked together to craft this very special hand embroidery kit. Read on to learn about the specialty threads included in the kit and the inspiration for the design.

Melissa's hand-dyed silk and wool-silk blend fibers are an absolute JOY to work with. She sent me a rainbow of samples to play with and I was immediately inspired!

Her threads are incredibly soft and shiny, and the nature of the threads, combined with variegation from the dye process creates colors that seem to glow from the surface of my embroidery fabric.

These threads are absolutely beginner friendly and their nature actually makes some stitches (like satin stitch) easier to create!

Did you recognize the inspiration for the Song of the Garden Bandit design? I have always loved William Morris's intricate textile designs! Morris was key during the British Arts and Crafts movement, and his poetry, artwork, dye processes and love of nature still influence the art of hand-crafting today.

His most famous design, The Strawberry Thief, was inspired by a regular scene from his garden in Oxfordshire. I chose one of those sneaky, strawberry patch-raiding thrushes to be the star of our design, with my own added embroidery details and style.
