Fly Stitch and Variations

Fly Stitch * Fly Stitch Fill * Attached Fly Stitch

Fly stitch. Come up through your fabric at A and back down a horizontal stitch length away at B, leaving a loop. Come up at C and tack the loop down at D to create your fly stitch. Fly stitch can be used for “U” or “V” shaped decorative accents such as petals and leaves.

Fly stitch fill. Begin with a center straight stitch from A to B. Next begin filling the shape with fly stitches starting at the top and working towards the base of the shape. Filling a leaf with fly stitch creates a unique center vein made of anchor stitches. The fly stitch angle and distance between stitches can modified to create different looking leaves.

Attached fly stitch. Begin with a fly stitch with a long anchor stitch. Come up through your fabric at A and back down a horizontal stitch length away at B, leaving a loop. Come up at C and tack the loop down at D to create your fly stitch. Continue, creating a chain of touching fly stitches to create a vine.
